US Special Envoy on Afghan peace process Zalmay Khalilzad says the intra-Afghan negotiations must resume on 5 January.
US envoy Khalilzad has recently said in a thread of tweets that “given how much is at stake, it is imperative that there are no delays in resumption of talks and they must resume on Jan 5 as agreed”.
According to him, tragically, the war continues and the need for a political settlement, reduction in violence, and a ceasefire remain urgent.
The Afghan government – Taliban negotiating teams in Doha have recently announced that they will take 20-day off to consult on the agenda items.
Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and the commander of Resolute Support Mission (RSM) in Afghanistan General Austin Scott Miller met the Pakistani Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Monday.
Matters of mutual interest, including overall regional security situation, with particular reference to ongoing Afghan reconciliation process, came under discussion, according to reports.
Gen Bajwa appreciated the role of RSM for peace and stability in Afghanistan and assured that Pakistan will continue to play its positive role for peace and stability in the region.
The visiting dignitaries also appreciated Pakistan’s efforts for facilitating the process towards the mutual objective of peace in the region.
