National Security Adviser (NSA) Hamdullah Mohib says that Afghan defense and security forces have acquired the necessary capabilities to defend the country and that Afghanistan needs economic assistance and long-term commitment from the United States.

Speaking at a Hudson Institute event titled “Prospects for Peace: A Conversation with Afghanistan’s National Security Advisor”, NSA said the Afghan security and defense forces have acquired the necessary skills and capabilities to defend the country.
“I am confident in the capabilities of the Afghan as the defense and security forces. I think with this dialogue that we have begun with our partners in the U.S. government, we will be able to create an environment that will bring that long term stability to Afghanistan,” he said.

On peace process, Hamdullah Mohib said that the Afghan government is pursuing all possible avenues to get to a dignified and lasting peace.
“… we are willing to make any sacrifices that are required for durable peace in Afghanistan. Starting with the power sharing, but is power sharing our real problem?” he said, adding that “We find a lot of disagreement with the Taliban on multiple issues. As our negotiating team in Doha has found out, that we have differences of opinion on foreign policy on domestic policy, on the rights of women, on the rights of minorities”.

According to him, the Taliban are feared of facing the Afghan people.
“Again, I will repeat what I said earlier, (Taliban) they’re feared, they’re not respected, they’re not loved, they’re not liked even. They’re feared,” Mohib stressed.
NSA stated that the Taliban has so far shown no flexibility in their ideological and philosophical outlook.
“Our negotiating team that has been engaging with the Taliban reports back to us that they don’t see any change in Taliban from the time that the little stunt that they had during their regime,” he continued.
